What Is Ziwei Dousu (자미두수 / 紫微斗數)? Purple Star Astrology

Ziwei Dousu (자미두수 / 紫微斗數), often translated as Purple Star Astrology, is an Eastern astrological tradition that reads a life by placing stars in twelve positions on a destiny chart. Though it shares Eastern roots with saju, it speaks a different language: not characters and elements, but stars and palaces.
A Destiny Map Read Through Stars
The name Ziwei Dousu comes from its principal star, Ziwei (자미성 / 紫微星), the Purple Star. Dousu means to measure the stars, so the name literally describes reading a destiny by measuring stars around the central Ziwei star.
The stars here are not celestial bodies you would view through a telescope. They are symbolic stars, refined over centuries to represent a person’s temperament and the phases of a life. Ziwei Dousu draws a destiny map by seating these stars in fixed positions determined by your birth details.
The Twelve Palaces — Twelve Stages of Life
A Ziwei chart is divided into twelve palaces (궁 / 宮). A palace is an area, or stage, of life. They include the Life palace (the self), the Siblings palace, the Spouse palace, the Children palace, the Wealth palace, the Health palace, the Travel palace, the Friends palace, the Career palace, the Property palace, the Fortune palace, and the Parents palace.
These twelve palaces are like twelve windows that survey a whole life. By seeing which stars have entered which palace, one reads the flow of that area. The most central is the Life palace, which stands for the self, and whether Ziwei or some other star sits there becomes the starting point of the whole interpretation.
Major and Minor Stars
Dozens of stars appear in Ziwei Dousu. The weightier ones are the major stars, and those that support from the side are the minor stars. The chief star, Ziwei, is often likened to an emperor, symbolizing dignity and leadership, while major stars such as Tianfu, Tianji, the Sun, Wuqu, Tiantong, and Lianzhen each add their own character.
To this are added stars that bring fortune and stars that bring difficulty, as well as transforming influences (such as the four transformations: prosperity, power, fame, and adversity) that change a star’s nature. The art of Ziwei Dousu lies in reading which stars have gathered together in which palace.
How It Differs From Saju
Saju and Ziwei Dousu both read a person from birth details, but they use different languages. Saju centers on the eight characters (Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches) and the balance of the five elements, interpreting a person through the energies of yin-yang and the elements. It is, so to speak, a way of reading the weave of one’s energy.
Ziwei Dousu, by contrast, lays out a single map of stars seated in twelve palaces and looks at which star has entered each area of life. Because it divides concrete areas like wealth, relationships, and health into separate palaces, the question of which area is in flux tends to stand out more distinctly.
For this reason the two traditions complement rather than compete with each other. Where saju shows the broad balance of energy, Ziwei Dousu shows a picture stage by stage. This is part of why CrossFates lays out both traditions together for comparison.
Remember It Is for Reference
Ziwei Dousu is an intricate symbolic system refined over a thousand years, but its stars are, in the end, symbols meant to illuminate a person.
